When Orchid Flowers Fall Off Does The Orchid Still Produce Flowers

Orchids are tropical flowers that require dry foundations with good air circulation.

Widely distributed around the globe, orchids are tall, statuesque plants that grow one to two long flower stalks, which support up to 10 blooms. Those blooms come back year after year with the right care. Does this Spark an idea?

Perennials

Orchids are perennials and grow from a root system that survives for years. Although the flowers, stalks and leaves may fall off, the roots continue on with new growth.

Time Frame

Orchids bloom at different times of the year, depending on their species. Blooms can last for months once they're open, but will wilt and fall off once they're spent. Gardeners should leave the flower stalk intact as long as it remains green, as it will grow new flowers the next year.

Care

Orchids require specific care if they're to live and bloom. Gardeners should water orchids with 1 inch of water every week, as the flowers prefer dry roots to standing water. Orchids do best with orchid-specific fertilizer once a month in their resting season and once a week when they're producing new growth. Orchids should never sit in bright, direct sunlight, but thrive in filtered sunlight and artificial light.
