There is more than one way to become an electrician in Cincinnati, Ohio. The State of Ohio requires that all electricians apply for licensing in order to become a commercial contractor, meaning those who plan to work on commercial buildings such as factories or business offices. This is done through the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board, or OCILB. However becoming a residential or general contractor electrician requires no licensing, but does require work experience, insurance and sometimes testing.
Instructions
1. Exhibit documentation that proves you are 18 years of age or older as well as proof of citizenship in order to meet requirements for the OCILB commercial contractor application.
2. Check out your schooling options. Cincinnati State Technical and Community College offers many courses under their Electrical Engineering Technologies Department. Places like this offer you the opportunity to learn on-site with experienced instructors to help you out along the way. They will make getting your certification easier and will give you the skills you need to pass the testing.
3. Obtain contractor liability insurance coverage by contacting your local insurance agent of preference. Ohio asks for at least $500,000 typically, but check with your local agent to be sure. You will need to submit proof of coverage when submitting your licensing application.
4. Apply and take the electrician contractor exam through OCILB. Submit all required forms and, upon completion, you will next take the contractor exam. More instructions may come with the information that OCILB will send you upon completion of the electrical contractor exam. Follow the instructions provided.
5. Complete the contractor exam, which will entitle you to your electrician license from the OCILB. The test is a two-part exam, which will go over the technical as well as the business side of electrical contractor work.
