Rural Housing Repair Grants and Loans
This program gives grants of up to $7,500 to people 62 and older to fix health and safety hazards in their homes. Loans of up to $20,000 are also available, and can be combined with a grant for a maximum of $27,500. A program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the program is available in areas deemed "rural," not in urban areas. To be eligible, households must meet income requirements. Other USDA grants
Individual Water and Waste Grants and Housing Preservation Grants (HPG) are also available through USDA. These grants are income-based with no age guidelines. Individual Water and Waste grants are available only to homeowners in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas for installation of plumbing and sewer services and fixtures in the home. HPG grants fund repair and rehabilitation of housing for low-income residents. Funds can be used for rental property as well as owner-occupied homes.
HOME Investment Partnerships
HOME is the largest federal housing block grant program of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). It operates in partnership with state, county and city governments. Focusing on affordable housing, each local HOME program has flexibility to set its own priorities and determine allocate funds. Housing rehabilitation is a common use for HOME funds. Community Development Block Grant
HUD's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) is given to states and cities with populations over 50,000.
