Vase used as lamp base
Lamps are used for ambience, decorative accents and task lighting in a room. A classic table lamp can be built with a classic vase or other items, such as blocks of sanded wood glued together, a lamp kit and a traditional lampshade. Selecting something to use for the base is fun. Consider your decorating style, available objects from collections, your decorating colors and your hobbies. Keep in mind what you want the lamp to do in the room besides provide light. For instance, do you want the lamp to be a conversation piece, or do you want it for lighting only? Design Classic Table Lamps
1. Depending on the base chosen, select a lamp kit for a ceramic vase or a lamp kit for a wooden base. Find the rubber stopper in the standard stopper lamp kit that fits the top opening of the ceramic vase or other object that you are using for a base. If you are using smooth blocks of wood, glue them together so that the stopper can be glued in a recessed area of the top or use a screwdriver and screws to screw the lamp kit base to the base of the lamp. There are usually several size stoppers in the lamp kit. The cord will be above the stopper.
2. Push the rod into the middle of the stopper, and tighten it securely. Pliers may be used to help tighten. For a wooden base, screw the stopper into the stopper base.
3. Affix the brass washer and locknut on the end of the rod. The lamp socket should be on the other end.
4. Insert the wiring rod into the vase or recessed area between the wooden blocks, leaving the socket end up. Glue the socket in place, or if the stopper fits the opening securely, use the rubber stopper only.
5. Attach the harp to the top of the socket base.
6. Remove the locknut from the top of the harp, and place the lampshade on top. Screw on the locknut to secure the shade.
7. Insert the light bulb, and plug in the lamp to an electrical outlet.
