A home repair business can be a simple single-person handyman service or a large and complex corporation catering to major home builders and apartment complexes. If you're just starting out with your business, taking time to plan it carefully will be an investment that allows you to get a clear idea of all aspects of your business and to check the health of your business once you've begun.
Instructions
1. Determine exactly what services you will offer. This is based on your expertise, and the skills available to you from subcontractors. At first you may confine your activities to those you already have the proper tools for, but if your skills warrant it you should plan how and when to invest in new tools, or determine if it would be more cost-effective to rent them. In that case, include those activities that you'll expand into at a later date.
2. Download a business-plan template from the Small Business Administration website. While no template will be able to fully describe your unique business, it should at least include the standard headings for a business plan. At minimum your business plan should include a company description, details of the services and products you offer, your marketing plan, the business environment in which you operate including competitors and regulations, and your financial projections for all the costs and revenue of the business.
3. Fill in the template with specific information about your business. Research local laws and regulations on going into other people's homes based on a contract. Determine where your customers are most likely to look when they search for a repair business, such as on Yelp or in the Yellow Pages, and decide how much of your budget will be spent on advertising in those places.
