Train For A Plumbing Test

Having a thorough knowledge of pipe systems is a must for plumbers.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, careers in the plumbing industry are considered to be in the top tier for highest pay and demand in the construction field. Before taking a plumbing test, it is recommended by the plumber's union that you complete a combination of coursework and apprenticeship work under a master plumber. Training for a plumbing test requires understanding and reviewing a variety of areas including drafting, math, safety procedures and building codes. Some state's plumbing test includes hands-on sections in designing and implementing rough plumbing installations while others have only written components.

Instructions

1. Review the codes and training requirements/certifications listed for the state in which you want to be licensed. The United Association Union of Plumbers should be able to provide you with this information if you contact them.

2. Obtain a "Plumbing Examination Study Guide" from an online source or through the plumber's union. Some study guides may be specific enough to include the grade percentage for each area on the examination. For example, 23 percent of the plumbing examination in California is on project planning and material selection. Since almost one quarter of the test is on this material, it would benefit you to have a thorough understanding of this topic.

3. Study old tests from the courses you have taken. Focus on the memorization topics such as safety procedures and building codes.

4. Practice reading blueprints, designing and implementing pipe installations and repair procedures for appliances and pipe systems.
