Old, drafty windows are a leading cause of high energy bills.
Replacing older windows with new, more energy efficient designs can help decrease homeowners' heating and cooling costs. Low income residents and schools in the state of New York can benefit from a number of grants that help make the installation of energy efficient windows more affordable. These grants are made available by organizations throughout the Empire State.
Weatherization Assistance Program
The New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal offers grants to assist homeowners with the cost of window replacements. These grants, which are distributed through the agency's Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), exist to help elderly, low income or disabled residents throughout New York improve the energy efficiency of their homes through repairs and improvements. In order to qualify for grant funding through the WAP program, applicants must not exceed 60% of the median state income. Preference is given to the elderly, families with children and disabled applicants. The maximum available grant is $6,500 per household. Interested applicants must apply directly through the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal.
