Offering up to $8,000 in down payment assistance, the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency provides help for first-time home buyers. The program is open to all qualified North Carolina residents.
To qualify for a housing grant, a family must meet certain income and citizenship requirements. The home you purchase has to also meet certain requirements to qualify for down payment assistance. The grant can also be used toward closing costs.

Homeownership Voucher Program
The Homeownership Voucher Program helps qualified families with paying the mortgage and other home ownership expenses. An application for the program must be filled out at the local housing authority.
There is a waiting list for the program. If the waiting list is full, you may not be able to fill out an application until there are openings. There are restrictions and requirements for the program, including you must remain in the home you select for at least a year.
Only first-time homeowners qualify for the program. You also have to attend home ownership counseling before you receive assistance.

House Charlotte Downpayment Assistance Program
The House Charlotte down payment assistance program offers up to $10,000 in grants that can be used toward the down payment on a home in certain neighborhoods. The home must be located in one of 87 designated neighborhoods to qualify.
Home buyers must participate in a pre-purchased education program. There are income requirements families must meet to be considered for the grant.
If you are an employed police officer, you can qualify for additional assistance. Your lender has to apply for the grant on your behalf.

Housing Action Resource Trust (HART)
The Housing Action Resource Trust down payment assistance program offers up to $25,000 to qualified home buyers. The grant can be used toward the down payment or closing costs on a newly constructed or existing home.
To qualify for the HART Program, you must be pre-approved or approved for a loan. The seller must also be a participant in the program to receive the grant.
