Diy Mobile Home New Roof

Mobile homes

Mobile home roofs withstand a lot of exposure to the elements. This exposure can eventually lead to damage, and even after sealing the roof, eventually the entire structure might have to be replaced. This is a large project, but there are solutions that a DIY mobile home owner can use to make the task easier and efficient. Does this Spark an idea?

About Metal Replacement Roofs

A metal mobile home roof is installed in place of the existing roof. This process involves removing the entire roof and then installing a new one in its place. Metal roof replacements are designed to fit standard and double-wide mobile homes. They consist of fabricated metal sheet panels. Each one is crafted to have runners or seams running the width of the panel. This assists in drainage and adds texture to the roof. The metal panels are purchased at a supply store and with basic power tools the assembly process is conducted over the course of a few days.

Removing the Roof

The existing roof is removed by first taking out the nails or bolts that secure it to the structure. Most roofs are installed on metal homes by bolting the material to the plywood underlay. A nail pry, crowbar and a drill are required to remove these screws. Chisels and a knife may also be used to break nails or break through sealants.

After the hardware is removed, the metal panels are taken off the roof. Once this is completed, inspect the roof for damage. Cracks, holes and rotted surfaces must be repaired by adding new roofing material, sealants or patches. Then another under layer is installed, typically a rubber roofing material. This step protects the underlayment from rot if the new roof leaks.

Installation

Once the under layer is in place, secured by roofing nails to the plywood, begin your new installation. A complete prefabricated roof shell may be placed on the home and bolted to the under layer with bolts or metal screws. Individual metal panels, the other option, are laid out on the roof and secured in place with screws or bolts as well.

Each panel must be sealed together like metal roofing installations on a home. Then holes are cut to allow vent pipes to pass through the panel. The edges are then sealed with roofing caulk or tar. Finally, flashing is installed around the edge of the roof using roofing nails. This is one of the most inexpensive DIY roofing replacements and it is designed to last several years.
