Leaks
1. Evaluate the leak. If it is small and insignificant, it is probably not worth the money it will cost to fix it. If it is caused by surface water rather than ground water, you may be able to divert the water's path and avoid the repair.
2. Dig a large, deep trench along the block wall where the leaking is coming from. Dig all the way to the area where the foundation meets the surface of the ground. For example, if you have a basement, dig outside the wall from the ground to just below the basement floor.
3. Mix the cement plaster until it is a smooth consistency. Climb into the ditch you made with your cement and a flat trowel.
4. Smooth the plaster over the surface of the block wall. Create a thick, even coat across the entire affected area. Wait about two days for the plaster to dry.
5. Climb back into the ditch with a clean trowel and spread the foundation tar across the hardened cement plaster in a thick, even coat. Wait another two to three days for the tar to dry.
6. Place a plastic drainage pipe along the bottom of the trench, close to the house.
7. Replace the dirt and earth into the hole and smooth it down.
Cracks
8. Examine the crack, especially its size. If the crack is 1 inch or wider, you may need to call a contractor to handle it. This is only because a wide crack could indicate serious foundation bowing and a threat to your house's structure. If the crack is not too wide, proceed.
9. Mix a drier batch of cement plaster. Make sure it is so dry that it still has flecks of hardened cement in it.
10. Insert the cement plaster deep into the crack. Fill the crack completely, inserting as much plaster as possible
11. Smooth the surface of the crack with the flat trowel. Allow a day or two for the cement to dry before covering it up or painting over it.
