Find A Grant For Home Repairs

You can get help financing home repairs of all kinds.

Homes require constant maintenance and home repairs of all kinds are a part of everyday life. However, it might not be easy for you to repair your home or hire a contractor for a variety of reasons. When you need some help with your home, there are a number of government organizations that are designed to help you find financing or funding for your home repairs. These organizations are all slightly different and you may find that one meets your specific needs better than another. Does this Spark an idea?

Housing and Urban Development

One of the agencies that you can contact is the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD office. This agency funds a number of projects, including home improvements for single family properties, though this agency can help with repairs on buildings with multiple families under certain conditions. The Section 203(k) program in particular helps with purchasing homes and repairing them so that they are inhabitable. The program covers basic needs such as painting, room additions and similar additions or repairs for newly purchased homes.

Housing Counseling Agencies

Housing counseling agencies are counseling agencies that are approved by HUD. They are nonprofit organizations that can be either private or public. There are a number of services that these agencies offer and a certain organization may offer different services from another. To get help with home repair, you need an organization that offers home improvement and repair counseling. Local organizations for your state are listed on the HUD webpage.

State Housing Finance Agencies

State Housing Finance Agencies are state-level organizations designed to help state residents with affordable housing options. However, these organizations can also help finance repairs, add accessibility modifications to a home in the event of an injury or disability, or can even even help improve the energy-efficiency of a home. These organizations can also help with urgent repairs that are necessary for the immediate safety of the residents, such as rotting floors or broken septic systems, and can help you if your home has elevated lead levels, often caused by lead paint.

Special Qualifications

Government programs are typically aimed at low- to middle-income families, but there are others who can benefit from these programs. If you are a veteran, a senior citizen or have a disability, there are specific government departments which are able to help you with home repairs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can be contacted if you are a veteran. Eldercare Locator is a service for senior citizens. If you have a disability, you should contact the vocational rehabilitation service office nearest to you.
