In order to renegotiate your mortgage, you must find out who your lender is.
Attempting to renegotiate the terms of your mortgage is an especially challenging task when you do not know who owns your mortgage. In some cases, eligibility to participate in programs such as the Home Affordable Refinance program will be determined by the group who owns the mortgage on your property. Thus it can be vital to discover who has purchased the note on your property.
Instructions
1. Utilize the Fannie Mae website to see if Fannie Mae has purchased your loan through the link in the References section. You can determine if your loan has been bought by Fannie Mae by simply entering your physical address. Fannie Mae loans are eligible for participation in the Home Affordable Refinance program.
2. Check the Freddie Mac website, which is also available through a link in the References section, to see if your loan has been purchased by Freddie Mac. These loans are also eligible for the Home Affordable Refinance mortgage modification program.
3. Contact your mortgage servicing company. This is the company to which you make out your monthly mortgage checks. Ask them to provide you with the name of the note holder and then use the Hope Now mortgage company directory link in the Resources section to access the contact information of the note holder.
4. Visit the county clerk's office. Some mortgage note holders will file a record indicating that they have bought the note. Ask an employee at the clerk's office to show you all of the records related to your property
5. Seek assistance from a United States Housing and Urban Development-approved housing counseling agency. A list of these approved counseling agencies can be reviewed on the HUD website. The counselor should be able to assist you in finding your mortgage holder if you are still unable to discover his identity and will not charge you for his services.
