Fix Old Sewing Machines


Whether you have a beautiful treadle sewing machine that is more than 100 years old, or you have metal sewing machine from the 70's, sewing machine repair is something you may need. No matter how old they are, sewing machines are tools, and you will discover that it can be enormously satisfying to get them into working order.


Instructions


1. Research your old sewing machine. Look it over and figure out what brand it is and the year it was made. This can tell you a great deal about how well rated it was, how likely it is that you can get it back into working order and what spare parts you might need. Singer, in particular, has a great deal of information on its older models


2. Find your sewing machine's operating manual. We think of operating manuals as things that come with new appliances, but nearly every old sewing machine has a manual that goes with it. Contact the machine's manufacturers or look for a site that will allow you to download the manual online.


3. Take your old sewing machine apart using your screwdriver.


4. Take pictures of the parts as you remove them. This can help you figure out put your old sewing machine back together.


5. Remove the slide plate, presser foot, needle, throat plate, face plate and bobbin case. Depending on the model, some of these parts will not come off. Do not force them if they do not come up readily.


6. Soak the parts you have removed in a bowl filled with cleaning fluid. Read the directions on your cleaning fluid carefully and make sure to note whether you need to add water and what concentration you should use.


7. Clean the machine head. Look for a way to open up the panel that exposes this area, which contains the interior working parts of your old sewing machine. Use your large needle to clean out all the oil holes. Use your cloth to wipe away any debris or old encrustations.


8. Turn the hand wheel to make sure that everything turns freely.


9. Remove the small parts from the bowl of cleaning fluid and dry them off thoroughly.


10. Reassemble your old sewing machine.
