Home Remedies For Removing Scratches From Glass

The best way to keep windows and glass tables looking shiny and new is by taking preventative measures, such as placing protective material over them or putting something soft between an object and the glass. However, in case a glass surface does become marred by an unsightly scratch, there are some home remedies that may work to help minimize the scratch's appearance. Does this Spark an idea?

Toothpaste or Baking Soda

Try buffing some nonabrasive toothpaste or a baking soda paste into the affected area with a soft wool cloth. This technique may work on small scratches. You may have to repeat the process several times for a more stubborn scratch. Simply rinse the area clean when you're through.

Jeweler's Rouge

Get some jeweler's rouge, or cerium oxide, which is available at most jewelry stores, arts and crafts stores, and online. Apply some to a polishing pad and rub at the affected area. You can try using an electric buffer if one is available, although polishing the scratch manually will guard against accidentally cracking the glass or adding more scratches to it. Using a spray bottle, apply a mix of 1/2 oz. of ammonia with 2 cups of warm water onto the scratch, and wipe the area clean with a lint-free cloth or paper towel. Repeat this process until you are happy with the appearance of the glass.

Nail Polish

You may be able to hide a scratch by applying a coat of clear nail polish to the affected area. After you've evenly applied nail polish over the scratch, remove the excess with nail polish remover and a clean cloth.

Vehicle Cleaning Wax

Some commercial products such as vehicle cleaning wax work to remove scratches. Although they are often used to polish cars, the substance can fill in and remove scratches on glass. Simply apply the solution to the affected area with a soft, clean cloth and gently polish the area until the scratches are gone. Use this technique with care, and make sure to read the product's instructions thoroughly.

Windshield Water Repellent

Windshield water repellents may work to remove scratches from glass, and they also repel dirt and moisture. Apply the solution with a soft cloth and polish the glass gently until you're happy with the results. This technique is more successful with superficial scratches rather than deep ones.
