Install a rubber membrane overlay to protect the interior from water damage.
Over years of wear and exposure to the elements, your mobile home's existing tar or rubber roofing will suffer mild to severe damage, cracks and holes. If left untreated, these unavoidable cracks and holes can begin to spread and cause serious damage inside of your mobile home. Overlaying an existing tar or rubber roof with a rubber roofing membrane provides you the security and dependability of the product without the hassle and expense of a tear-down. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Clean the existing rubber or tar roof with a power washer. Holding the nozzle at a 45-degree angle, work your way from one corner of the roof to the other to remove any dirt, leaves or other debris. Allow the roofing to dry completely before continuing.
2. Examine the seams of the existing roof, if applicable. Remove any adhesive or dirt from the seams with a wire brush. Removing the existing glue assures the new roofing adhesive adheres properly.
3. Measure the roof's surface area before unrolling the replacement rubber roof membrane. Allow the unrolled membrane to remain in a sunny area for at least 30 minutes, as this helps it soften and remain flat during installation.
4. Cut the rubber roofing membrane according to the mobile home roof's dimensions with a utility knife. Lay the first piece of rubber roofing membrane, which comes in large rolls, on top of the existing roof. Manipulate the new roofing membrane until its edge and the edge of the existing roof meet. Cut out holes with the utility knife to accommodate for vent holes, chimneys or any other obstructions.
5. Prepare the roofing adhesive according to the package directions. Lift both sides of the new roofing membrane and apply a thin layer of the adhesive to its bottom with a paintbrush. Repeat this process on the second half of the membrane.
6. Run a weighted roller over the roofing membrane to ensure the adhesive sets. Repeat installing the remaining roofing membrane over the existing roof in the same manner, paying attention there is no gap at the seams.
7. Allow the roofing adhesive to dry for at least 12 hours before applying some denatured alcohol to remove adhesive that may have seeped through the seams. Apply seam tape, which generally is included with the rolled rubber membrane or available at home improvement stores, over the seams. The tape prevents water from seeping between the seams and breaking down the glue.
