So you have a busted water main or line to an outside tap (because you forgot to shut off the line and it froze). The original pipe is copper and it's the only one without heat tape. Here's fix it. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. First step is to determine how badly damaged the water line is. In case of the water main it's best to replace the entire thing. For a line to a tap that has a shut-off valve it's up to you to decide if you want to replace the whole thing or just the broken section. If you're mobile home is high enough off the ground to have easy access to underneath it's simple to inspect the lines. If access is limited replacing the entire line will save some time as well as stress.
2. Turn off main water tap. You don't want to waste more water than you probably already have. Make sure you have enough water for washing, cooking, drinking, flushing toilet, before you turn the water off.
3. Cut the copper pipe 6 inches from either end if the line (or 6 inches on either side of break if only replacing/repairing a small portion). Take a 6 inch sample with you to the home supply store so you can get the right size PVC and clamps.
4. Now you're ready to install your new water line. Get an estimated measurement of how long the new line needs to be. Either measure the removed copper or the length of the home from beginning to end of water line. Cut PVC to required length
5. Use a non toxic lubricant on the inside of the PVC. Using torch or hair dryer, slightly warm pvc and slide it over the remaining piece of copper. Slide clamp into place and tighten securely.
6. Turn water main tap on slowly and check for leaks. If necessary for your location add heat tape to all exposed water pipes.
