Movers in Georgia are regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission.
When planning a move, finding the right mover can be overwhelming. In Georgia, the Georgia Public Service Commission is the state agency that is responsible for making sure that movers are certified and following state regulations at all times; they also keep a list of certified movers to help you identify a mover that is in compliance with state regulations. Does this Spark an idea?
Moving Rates
All cost estimates from licensed movers should be in writing. If a mover is moving less than 50 miles, then the total cost should be calculated using the number of workers and hours required for loading, unloading, and moving. If the move is more than 50 miles, the charges are based on the weight of the shipment and the distance of the move. The rate is not to exceed the maximum tariff rate as set by the Public Service Commission; this rate is dependent on factors that vary with each move.
Packing
A licensed moving company will provide limited liability coverage of your goods, provided the mover has packed them; items that you pack on your own are not required to be covered by the mover. There are three types of liability available. The first, actual cash value, should not exceed $300 per move. The second, full value, covers all the items that you are moving, but movers are not required to offer this coverage. The third option is full coverage, less a $300 deductible paid by the mover.
Claims
Movers must act on claims within 90 days of filing. The mover may choose to pay, settle, or deny a claim. The mover also has the right to inspect any damaged property before answering the claim.
Interstate
The Georgia Public Service Commission does not have authority over moves that start or end in a different state. Moves across state lines are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
