Become A Fireman Or Emt

Firemen and EMTs have similar skill sets and training for their jobs.

In the line of duty, firemen and EMTs must think and react quickly. Everyday, people rely on them in medical and other emergency situations. To work in one field often requires the skills and credentials of the other. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that nearly all fire departments require firemen to be certified EMTs at the basic level. Not only do both career paths require you to have a strong sense of public service and courage, but you must complete initial and ongoing training.

Instructions

1. Obtain a degree in fire science or fire engineering to increase the odds of securing employment or promotion.

2. Complete fireman coursework (at a fire school or online) on topics including local building codes and fire prevention.

3. Fulfill a fire department's hands-on training, which includes training in the areas of hazardous material control, first aid and CPR and use tools such as chainsaws, axes, fire extinguishers and ladders.

4. Maintain your health and physical condition to pass rigorous tests of flexibility, coordination and strength to work as a fireman. You must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. To train, run stairs while wearing a vest or backpack weighing 30 to 40 pounds. Alternate repititions of push-ups with leg squats for additional physical training.

5. Apply to take the fireman exam. Check your city government for dates and locations. Pass all areas of the fireman exam, which includes a written portion, physical agility, a medical and psychological exam and an oral interview.

6. Complete training as an EMT through coursework and hands-on training at a vocational school or community college. Learn to assess patients with respiratory and cardiac problems and traumatic injuries, and to prepare for emergency childbirth.

7. Apply to become a certified EMT. Take and pass the test offered through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Visit the organization's site for test dates and locations.

8. Continue training to reach the intermediate or advanced level of EMT work.
