Stucco is a material used on exteriors to provide a characteristic texture. It is made from the mixture of a rough power and a binding agent. You can use stucco on almost any exterior surface to provide a visual flare. You can buy it in a wet mixture that you can brush or rake onto walls and exteriors. Application techniques can alter the the texture and thickness of the stucco, allowing you to exert some creative control over the final look. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Apply a liberal coating of bonding agent to the surface you will be stuccoing. Use a brush to even the coat and ensure maximum coverage. Wait for the bonding agent to dry before applying any stucco. It should take around half an hour to dry completely.
2. Apply a base coat of stucco in wide swaths directly to the bonding agent using a trowel. Aim for a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
3. Gouge horizontal marks into the surface of the base coat with your plastering rake, after allowing the base coat to dry for about 20 minutes. Allow the base coat to dry for a full day after making the scratches.
4. Apply a finish coat on top of the face coat using your trowel. The scratches in the base coat will allow the finish coat to embed firmly into the texture of the wall. The thickness of the finish coat is up to personal preference, but should not exceed 1/2 inch. If the finish coat is too thick, it may warp or slide during the drying process. Allow the finish coat to dry for a few days to finalize the process.
