People with disabilities are eligible for home modifcation assistance.
People with disabilities can receive financial assistance to pay rent for their housing units from several government grant programs. Some grant programs also provide funds to cover the costs of home modification and alteration projects to make homes of disabled people more accessible. These government grants are not required to be repaid by the recipients.
Public and Indian Housing Grants
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) sponsors grants for local public housing authorities (PHAs) to provide safe, decent and affordable subsidized housing to low income, disabled and elderly persons or families. Grant amounts cover the shortfall between the PHA's operating expenses and their projected income from rent and other sources. These grants are also open to tribal housing agencies.

VA Specially Adapted Housing for Veterans
Veterans with disabilities are eligible for grants to make home modifications through the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). There are three types of grants under this program. Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grants, which are worth up to $50,000, are generally used to make homes accessible for wheelchairs. The Special Homes Adaptions (SHA) grants, which can reach $10,000, are used to address mobility issues so veterans can move around their homes independently. The Home Improvement and Special Alterations (HISA) are also used to pay for alterations needed in veteran's homes. HISA grants are open to veterans who have service-related disabilities ($4,100) and non service-related disabilities ($1,200). SHA and SAH grants, however, are only available to veterans with service-related disabilities.

Supportive Housing Grants
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) also funds supportive housing grants to help very low income persons with disabilities obtain housing. Grants are used to construct, rehabilitate and/or purchase structures to be occupied by those with disabilities. Funds are also used for rental payment assistance by covering the costs between the operating costs of the structures and the tenant's contribution limit (30 percent of their income). Non-profit organizations are eligible sponsors of these grants.
