Home Beautification Grants For Disabled Veterans

There are three different housing grants available to disabled veterans.

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers three different grant programs, with grants ranging from $1,200 to $50,000, for the purpose of obtaining, remodeling, or paying down the mortgage of a home. The veteran and the home must meet certain criteria in order to qualify. Does this Spark an idea?

Specially Adapted Housing Grant

The Specially Adapted Housing grant, or SAH, has a maximum award amount of $50,000. To qualify for this grant, the veteran must be rated as permanently and totally disabled in accordance with Chapter 11 of the Department of Veterans Affairs Disability Code. Additionally, it must be determined that it is medically feasible for the veteran to live in the home.

The veteran must complete and file VA Form 26-4555 with his local Veteran's Affairs, or VA, regional office. Once the VA determines the disabled veteran's eligibility, a VA representative will assist the veteran throughout the process. Once the veteran is determined eligible, an interview is completed within 40 days. The time line for dispursement of funds depends entirely on the type of work being done. If the veteran already owns the home, the money is dispersed in a lump sum upon final approval; otherwise, the money is released by completion of specified construction phases. If the veteran is determined ineligible, the veteran may file an appeal with the Board of Veteran's Appeals.

Special Home Adaptation Grant

The Special Home Adaptation grant, or SHA, has a maximum benefit of $10,000 and is available to disabled veterans with a service connected disability rated at 100 percent. This grant can only be applied to the adaptation of the home the veteran is living on, and includes renovations such as the installation of ramps, new toilets, showers, counters and wider doors. These improvements must be deemed medically necessary. Veterans wishing to apply for an SHA grant need to complete VA Form 26-4555 and file it with their local VA regional offices.

Home Improvements and Structural Alterations Grant

The Home Improvements and Structural Alterations grant, or HISA, is available to any veteran with either a service-connected or non service-connected disability. This grant pays for renovations necessary to allow the veteran access to the home, such as ramps or rails, and use of the bathroom, and requires a medical determination that the renovations are necessary for the treatment of the veteran. The maximum benefit for a service connected disability is $4,100 and can be awarded along with either the SAH or SHA grant. The maximum benefit for a non service-connected disability is $1,200. Veterans seeking to obtain a HISA grant need to complete VA Form 10-0103 and file it with their local VA regional offices.
