1. Register your business at the federal level with the Internal Revenue Service website. Complete the online form to receive an Employer Identification Number (EIN). This serves as the identification for your business much the same as Social Security numbers identify people.
2. Apply for a local business license. Contact city hall or your local county government to receive an application for a business license if such a license is required. Complete the forms as required and pay the appropriate fee. Renew the business license regularly to ensure you remain in compliance with the law.
3. Arrange to collect sales tax. Contact the department of revenue at the state and local levels to find out what forms you need to complete for sales tax if it is collected in your area. Learn calculate sales tax on every service and repair you complete based on the percentage applicable in your area. Collect this amount from customers and pay it to the state and local government as required.
4. Register with toxic waste. Visit the website of your state's hazardous waste department to view a list of companies and individuals approved to pickup and transport toxic and hazardous materials from your business. Establish a contract with one of the companies from the list to pick up and properly dispose of your used motor oil, antifreeze, power steering fluid and other liquid products.
