Repair & Paint Wooden Deck Railings

Wooden deck railings can receive wear from frequent use and from occasional accidents. They're exposed to the weather year-round. This use and exposure causes them to rot in places, particularly if the finish degrades. It is important to repair your deck railing to avoid having to replace the boards completely. You can repair small worn and rotted areas using wood epoxy. Once you have made the necessary repairs to the railing, you should maintain the finish on the deck to prevent future damage from occurring. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Scrape the paint around the damaged area of the deck railing using a paint scraper.

2. Brush the damaged area vigorously with a wire brush to remove any rotted wood and other debris that has built up in the area.

3. Sand the damaged area and the area around it with medium-grit sandpaper in the direction of the wood grain.

4. Apply a light coat of epoxy primer onto the damaged area with a paintbrush. Allow the primer to set up for approximately 15 minutes.

5. Fill the damaged area of the deck railing with epoxy filler, using a putty knife to pack it tightly into the wood. Allow the filler to dry for 24 hours.

6. Sand the filler with fine-grit sandpaper in the same direction as the wood grain until it is flush with the surface of the wood, and sand the rest of the railing to prepare it for primer.

7. Prime the repaired railing with exterior primer, using a paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry for at least four hours.

8. Paint the repaired railing with exterior paint to match the existing paint on the deck, using a paintbrush.
