Grants For Handicapped Accessibility In Ohio

Residents with disabilities in Ohio can contact a non-profit agency to get help to make modifications to their homes.

Non-profit agencies across Ohio offer funding and repair services to help low-income people with disabilities make accessibility modifications to their homes. Applicants must meet the income limit requirements to get help to modify their homes. During the application process, applicants will be asked to verify their incomes. Since funding is limited, they may be referred to an alternative agency that provides assistance to make accessibility modifications.

People Working Cooperatively

People Cooperatively of Cincinnati is a non-profit organization committed to helping low-income households make accessibility modifications and general repairs to their homes. To qualify for services, total household income cannot exceed 50 percent of the area's median income. The average client makes $13,000 annually. These services are for homeowners only. Typical modifications include constructing wheelchair ramps or installing grab bars in the bathroom. Applicants are required to provide verification of income and proof of ownership for the home that needs modification.

The Ability Center of Greater Toledo

The Ability Center of Greater Toledo's Home Accessibility Program helps residents in Defiance, Fulton, Henry, Lucas, Ottawa, Williams and Wood counties make accessible modifications to their homes. Homeowners must meet the income limit level requirements to qualify for help. The program helps disabled homeowners construct a wheelchair ramp or other minor accessibility modifications. Income-qualified households are provided materials and labor at no cost to them. Homeowners who do not meet the income requirements can apply for a below market rate loan with Directions Credit Union. The Ability Loan Program provides longer terms to help disabled homeowners pay for accessibility modifications.

Northwestern Ohio Community Action Commission

The Northwestern Ohio Community Action Commission works with the Ohio Department of Development to provide funding for the Handicap Modifications Program to low-income homeowners. To qualify for a grant, the homeowner's income cannot exceed 35 percent of the area's median income. The homeowner can get help to install grab bars, handicap toilets and repair wheelchair ramps. The homeowner can also get help to make emergency repairs to the home.
