How Get Low Income Housing In Illinois

Preference may be given to an elderly or disabled person when issuing vouchers.

People in Illinois in need of low-income housing can apply for a housing voucher that can be used to obtain housing. The voucher gives a family with an extremely low to low income assistance with paying the monthly rent of a home or apartment. The program is funded through grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In Illinois, the program is administered through local public housing authorities. Due to the increased need for low-income housing assistance, there is a waiting list of up to several years.

Instructions

1. Locate the nearest Illinois public housing authority using the list provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (see Resources).

2. Visit the PHA and request an application for low-income housing. Depending on the PHA, you may be required to present identification to get an application.

3. Complete and submit the application in person at the PHA. You may be allowed to take the application home and return it when it is completed. If not, complete the application in the PHA office. You will need to provide personal information such as your Social Security number and date of birth on the application. The application also asks for your monthly income. Review the application before submitting it for accuracy. Ask for a receipt for the completed application. Keep the receipt in a secure location. You will be placed on a waiting list with other applicants.

4. Fill out the information packet you receive in the mail. The packet is mailed out when your name nears the top of the waiting list. You will need to enter personal and income information for each person in your household. Review the information you enter, and mail it back to the address listed.

5. Attend a briefing session at the PHA. Depending on the PHA, the session may be one-on-one or a group meeting. You will receive your low-income housing voucher during the session and be briefed on the program's guidelines. You may be required to fill out additional forms during the session.
