Grants For Florida'S Seniors

There are grants for programs that help senior citizens in Florida get more out of life.

Florida's senior citizens can benefit from a wide range of grants funded by various agencies of the federal government. The objective of many of these grants is to encourage the independence of seniors, keep them in their own homes and out of institutions, and improve their quality of life. Benefits from housing, jobs, transportation and senior centers are available through these grants.

Housing

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds a program to preserve elderly housing in Florida, and elsewhere, by converting existing housing into assisted-living facilities. The intent of this program is to allow senior citizens to continue living at home when they age and prevent institutionalization. Assisted-living facilities help seniors who are frail or have disabilities and need assistance with such activities as eating, bathing and dressing. Another grant program, the Mortgage Insurance-Rental Housing for the Elderly, insures lenders against loss on mortgages to finance rental housing for the elderly. Another program, the Multifamily Housing Service Coordinators grant, links seniors to support services in the community to prevent unnecessary institutionalization.

Employment and Volunteerism

Florida's seniors can take advantage of the Senior Community Service Employment Program, funded by the United States Department of Labor, Employment Training Administration. The objective of the program is to foster individual economic self-sufficiency by providing training for jobs in community service. This program is designed to benefit unemployed seniors age 55 and older. Special consideration is given to low-income individuals with poor employment prospects. Jobs may be in the public or private sector. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and provides grants to agencies to encourage seniors to volunteer in positions to meet critical community needs.

Elderly Transportation

The Capital Assistance Program is administered by the Department of Transportation, Federal Transit Administration. This program helps Florida's senior citizens by providing financial assistance to meet the needs of seniors with disabilities. Transportation services by private operators are paired with federal funding. Seniors living in urban and rural areas with insufficient public transportation may benefit from the Capital Assistance Program.

Services for Seniors

Florida's seniors can benefit from a nutrition program administered by the Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Aging. The objective of the Special Program for the Aging, Nutrition Services is to provide nutritious meals and education to the elderly. Meals are delivered to the homebound, and served to groups in the community. Another grant from the Administration on Aging is the Special Programs for the Aging, Supportive Services and Senior Centers program that encourages community agencies to provide services like multipurpose senior centers to the elderly. Transportation, in-home services and caregiver support is also provided with this grant.
