Become A Dentist In Ontario

Dentists give advice, diagnose and treat problems of the teeth or tissues in the mouth. Becoming a dentist takes years. However, there is continual demand for dentists not only in the United States but also in Canada and other countries. If you are seeking a career with job stability and a career with an attractive salary (particularly if you are a dentist in the United States or Canada) then becoming a dentist is for you. The information in this article includes steps that you need to take to become a dentist in Ontario, Canada.

Instructions

1. Contact the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (the governing body for all dentists in Ontario) and read and understand the specific requirements for becoming a registered/licensed dentist in Ontario.

2. Decide which dental specialty you intend to pursue. Do this while still finishing the requirements for a bachelor's or undergraduate degree so you will have a sense of what you're doing. For instance, in Ontario one can choose to be a general practitioner dentist or one can choose one of the following dental specialties: dental anesthesia, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral pathology, oral radiology, oral medicine, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics or public health dentistry. You may change your mind about your preferred specialty during dental school, however it is a good idea to have a specialty in mind as you go into dental school.

3. Go to dental school (after finishing the bachelor's/undergraduate degree). The University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario are both located in the province of Ontario and both of these universities have dental schools. There are also dental schools in other provinces of Canada that you could choose. You must successfully get a doctor of dentistry degree if you wish to be a dentist in Ontario. Dental programs in Canada typically last 4 years.

4. Complete a required dental residency where you will be supervised and where you will learn and gain experience in dentistry.

5. Take the National Dental Examination Board Exam in Canada and pass the exam. Register with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, then find a job as a dentist. Usually you can find a job through the career services department in the dental school or in some cases the dental school will post available jobs at the dental school website.
