Allocate Bandwidth With A Linksys

Users hogging your bandwidth will slow your connection speed to a crawl.

A Linksys router allocates an Internet connection among all the computers on your network, which allows each of the machines to access the Web and download files simultaneously. Sharing your connection may result in a serious loss of speed if some computers are using much more bandwidth, such as if they are frequently downloading large files. Any Linksys router with the Quality of Service (QOS) feature allows you to allocate the bandwidth so that no single computer is able to hog all the bandwidth available.

Instructions

1. Navigate your web browser to the address "http://192.168.1.1" to access the Linksys router's interface page. Type "Admin" in the "user name" field if you haven't previously changed the existing user name.

2. Leave the "password" field blank if you haven't previously changed the default password. Click "Log In."

3. Navigate to the "Applications & Gaming" tab at the top of the window. Click the "QoS" link in the menu beneath the "Applications & Gaming" heading.

4. Click the "Enable" radio button to turn on the Quality of Service feature. Click the specific port or service you want to change, such as "Port 1" for the computer connected to the Linksys router's first port, or "FTP" for any data transferred through an FTP service.

5. Click the "High Priority" radio button to give that port or service the most bandwidth. Choose "Medium Priority" or "Low Priority" to allocate less bandwidth to that port or service.

6. Repeat the process with any other ports or services. Click "Save Settings" to change the bandwidth allocations.
