Keep Window Frames From Sweating

WIndow sweating isn't seen as often in newer homes.

Sweating around window frames or on the glass panes on the inside of a house is common in many colder areas. This is especially true in older homes that are less likely to have good ventilation or that have lesser quality windows. As air warms, it expands and holds moisture, and when it cools it looks to expel the excess water as condensation, which is most commonly seen around windows where there is insufficient insulation or air leakage from the outside. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a home vent fan in areas with high moisture like bathrooms or laundry rooms. These vents should dispel moist air outside and have sufficient power for the room size. Fans come in different capacities and are easy to calculate for placement. Make sure there is a gap under the room's door to allow air to enter when running the fan.

2. Ensure that gas fireplaces are properly vented or that you regulate their use to avoid moisture buildup, which is especially common in older or unvented gas fireplaces or space heaters.

3. Avoid cooking foods in the kitchen that produce large amounts of steam. Boiling water for vegetables or pasta or steam cookers produce a good deal of steam that vents into a room and can cause moisture to build up. Use a kitchen fan that vents to the outside to alleviate this if there is a large amount of kitchen steam.

4. Establish a set temperature for the home, and make sure vents don't blow directly upward at windows. Set the thermostat to a constant average temperature of 66 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and add diverters over heating vents to direct warm air out into the room away from the walls.

5. Use weather stripping and caulk to seal any air leaks around windows and doors. Cold air from leaking windows meeting warm inside air is one of the main causes of window sweating.

6. Install a permanent or portable dehumidifier to regulate the humidity in the home or rooms where there is a problem. Portable dehumidifiers are relatively inexpensive and are a quick and easy solution.
