Do I Need Experience To Become A Home Inspector

Experience is not needed for a home inspector certification.

According to Inspectapedia.com, a Directory of Building Inspection and Testing Professionals, there is no single profession or line of work "that would fully prepare you to become a house inspector." There is no experience required to take classes to become a certified home inspector by a licensed home-inspection training school.

Experience Is Helpful

As Inspectapedia.com notes further, it is extremely beneficial to have a strong background in roofing, electrical, plumbing and heating and cooling systems to be successful as a home inspector, and it warns that without a background in construction work, "you are at grave risk practicing in the field." The Bureau of Labor Statistics also recommends that "building inspectors should have a thorough knowledge of construction materials and practices."

Certification Required

A background in construction is not needed to enroll in a licensed home-inspector training school for certification as a home inspector. However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that requirements for a home-inspection certification vary considerably from state to state and suggests checking with your appropriate state agency for full information.

Getting Certified

As mentioned, prior construction experience is not a prerequisite for enrollment in a home-inspector training school. Depending on the requirements of the particular state, expect an enrollment fee, in-class education and an "in-field" training course.
