Adjust A Craftsman Garage Door'S Down Force

A Craftsman garage door opener has a number of adjustments that help the garage door operate smoothly with a minimum of wear on the working parts. The down force adjustment keeps the garage door from coming down too hard. If the down force adjustment is set too light, the door may close partially and then go back up again. Weather conditions may affect the down force of the garage door opener, so you may have to make adjustments as the seasons change. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check the garage door track for any dirt or debris that may be interfering with its operation.

2. Locate the down force adjustment control on the rear panel of the Craftsman garage door opener. It's the slotted dial control on the far right side.

3. Hold the garage door opener's remote in one hand. Press the button to make the door go down. Grab the bottom of the door when it's about 5 feet from the floor. If the down force is set correctly, the door should reverse automatically.

4. Decrease down force by turning the control counterclockwise approximately 10 degrees with a screwdriver if the door opener doesn't reverse automatically when you manually stop the door. Open and close the door through one complete cycle. Try stopping the door again. If it reverses automatically, it is set correctly.

5. Increase down force by turning the control clockwise with the screwdriver if the door reverses during a downward cycle. Make changes in 10-degree increments. Repeat the cycle and check the automatic reverse to make sure the down force adjustment is correct.
