Make An Estimate For A Brick Job

Material and labor costs need to be calculated for a brick job.


Estimates for a brick job can be made by using factors that include the cost-per-square foot for the brick and the size of the structure or wall. Preparing your estimate will require you to calculate various costs such as labor and materials that will be needed. Instructions


1. Calculate the size of the wall or structure to find the square footage by multiplying the width by the height, with a calculator. Use 20 x 5 as an example, to get a total square footage of 100.


2. Calculate the rate factor for labor, such as the amount of square feet per hour. Divide the square footage by the amount of square feet per hour. The result is the amount of hours to charge for labor. Multiply this number by the rate of labor per hour.


3. Determine the material cost for the wall or structure. There are generally seven standard sized bricks in a square foot, depending on the size of the brick used. Multiply the amount of bricks needed, per square foot, by the total square footage. This will result in 700 bricks (7 x 100 = 700).


4. Multiply the result from Step 3 by the cost per brick, for a 2010 example, use $0.25. Find the total amount of material cost. This will give you a total of $175 (700 x 0.25 = $175).


5. Determine the amount of mortar that will be needed for the job. Multiply the amount of brick needed per 100 square feet by the thickness of the joint, such as 3/8. This will give you the amount of mortar that is needed, in inches, for every 100 square feet of brick. Divide the number by 12 to convert the amount to feet.


6. Divide the square footage in Step 1 by 100. Multiply this number by the amount of mortar per 100 square feet in Step 5. Divide this number by the amount of coverage per bag of mortar mix, to find the number of bags of mortar mix that will be needed.
