Auto Tech Colleges In Colorado Springs

Two schools in Colorado Springs provide automotive technology training.


Automotive Technicians use specialized computer equipment to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair automobiles. Due to the increasing use of advanced technology to regulate and diagnose vehicles, automotive technicians may require specialized training and certifications beyond a high school diploma. In Colorado Springs, Colo., two schools offer degrees and programs in Automotive Technology.


Pikes Peak Community College


Pikes Peak Community College, the largest college in Colorado Springs, offers an Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology. The degree program--Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified---also provides the opportunity for students to become a Master Certified Automotive Technician. The Automotive Technology program focuses on automotive service and repair including courses on engines, transmission, fuel systems, diagnosis, tune-up and alignment. The college also offers a degree in Diesel Technology or Automotive Collision Technology as well as options for obtaining certificates in various automotive specialties.

IntelliTec College


IntelliTec College, a small private technical school in Colorado Springs, offers an Automotive Technician program with an Associate of Occupational Studies degree. IntelliTec offers small hands-on courses in engine performance and installation, maintenance, high-tech diagnostic equipment and troubleshooting. The Automotive Technology program has recently expanded to include new and advanced training equipment. The college partners with Snap-On tools and became the first Snap-On Certification Center in Colorado.

Job Outlook for Automotive Technology


The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the field of Automotive Technology in the United States will grow 5 percent from 2008 to 2018 and will grow 13 percent in Colorado from 2006 to 2016. It also predicts that the need for entry level technicians will increase due to the rise of vehicles in the United States as well as an increase in the lifespan of vehicles. Retiring automotive technicians will create new job openings. Employers will look for technicians who have ASE certification or post-secondary training. According to Automotive Careers Today, the starting salary for an Automotive Technician in Colorado is $27,563. The average starting salary in the United States for Automotive Technicians ranges from $24,000 to $31,000. The salary in Colorado for all Automotive Technicians averages around $35,000.
