New York State Low Income Home Improvement Grants

The EmPower program provides free fluorescent bulbs, among other energy efficency measures

New York State offers grants for home improvements that increase heating and energy efficiency in low-income households. Some programs require owner contributions or work with an energy efficiency specialist, but the improvements may pay for themselves in reduced heating and cooling costs. Does this Spark an idea?

Weatherization Assistance Program

The program provides home improvements that reduce heating and cooling costs for if your household is "at or below 60 percent of the state median income." You apply through a local agency or local weatherization provider that assesses and provides the improvements. Improvements may include measures to improve the heating system or keep cold air outside and heated air inside.

Assisted Home Performance with Energy Star

You may be eligible to receive a 50 percent subsidy up to $5,000 for the cost of improvements that improve energy efficiency assessed and designed by a Building Performance Institute accredited contractor if you're a customer of one of six participating utility companies and you earn less than 80 percent of state median income. If you don't fall within this income guideline, you're still eligible for subsidized loans or a subsidy of 10 percent of the cost of improvements up to $3,000.

EmPower

EmPower provides free energy saving tips, efficient lighting and even free or reduced cost energy efficient refrigerators if yours is inefficient; your household income is at or below the 60 percent of the state median income; and you're a customer of one of six participating utility companies. Income-eligible tenants can also participate free of charge.
