Craftsman Garage Door Opener Remote Problems

Craftsman makes automatic garage door openers.

A Craftsman automatic garage door opener is equipped with a wireless remote that can be used to raise and lower the door when the wall button is not within reach. These remotes are commonly placed inside of vehicles for easy access when departing or arriving home. If the remote fails to work, there may be several reasons why, including a dead battery, frequency disturbance or a need for reprogramming. Most problems can be relatively easy to troubleshoot and repair, eliminating the need to hire a potentially costly service technician. Does this Spark an idea?

Battery Replacement

The most common cause, and the most inexpensive repair, for a failed remote is a dead battery. This type of remote is usually powered by a lithium coin cell battery, which is available wherever batteries are sold. Remove the back cover of the remote and the battery. Insert a new battery and replace the cover. Once the light blinks, the remote is ready for use.

Reprogramming the Remote

If you have replaced a faulty or defective circuit board, you will need to reprogram the remote. Push the "Learn" button on the rear of the newly installed circuit board. Ensure that the light on the circuit board flashes. Push the button on the remote, and once it flashes, it has been successfully programmed.

Frequency Disturbance

Although uncommon, frequency disturbance can cause the remote to malfunction. Check to see if there are any electronic devices, such as an FM radio, positioned nearby the garage door opener that share the same MHz. Reprogram the remote.

Replacing the Remote

Remove the backing from the remote. You may need to replace it if the internal button cannot be depressed, has jammed or has been visibly damaged in some way. Remotes can be replaced fairly inexpensively wherever the Craftsman brand is sold. You can also replace the faulty remote with one from a compatible brand, such as Liftmaster. Reprogram the new remote as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Don't Be Hasty

Be sure to remember that a faulty remote does not mean that the motor is in need of repair, which costs substantially more. If you've eliminated all of the above problems, you'd be justified in hiring an experienced technician to take a look at the motor. Call the Craftsman technical support line at 1-877-488-1222 or check their website to schedule a repair.
