Repair Featherweight Sewing Machines

Featherweight sewing machines, or the Singer 221, are a favorite with quilters, seamstresses, and anyone who might want a reliable straight stitch machine in a small, portable, and charming package. Sturdy, mechanical construction means that most of these vintage machines can, with a little TLC, run just like new. Learning repair and maintain your featherweight sewing machine can save you money and even allow you to make that thrift store bargain into the investment of a lifetime.

Instructions

1. Clean the outside of the featherweight sewing machine with diluted all purpose cleaner and a soft cloth. Take the time to clean the outside before opening up the machine to avoid allowing dust or debris into the inside of the machine.

2. Check the integrity of the power cord and cord connecting the pedal to the Singer 221. Look for any signs of wear or damage. Replace the cord or cords if any damage is evident (see Resources).

3. Use a small screwdriver to remove screws and open up the machine. Set aside pieces, labeling them as you proceed.

4. Clear away any visible lint or debris from each area of the machine. Use a small brush to remove visible dust.

5. Clean old grease off of all the moving parts using kerosene or a spray lubricant. Use a hatpin or hemostats to remove any chunks or pellets of old grease from the gears of the machine. Wipe away kerosene residue with a clean rag. Look for damage to the gears as you proceed; however, in most cases you will find that the workings are in good order.

6. Examine the belt for signs of wear, slackness or damage. Turn the screw on the motor a single turn to loosen it slightly and remove the belt. Remove and discard the old belt. Put the new belt into the track. Be sure the belt will remain in place, but is not too tight. Tighten the screw on the motor.

7. Oil all moving parts on the Singer featherweight with sewing machine or 3-in-1 oil. Apply only a single drop to each point on the machine.

8. Reassemble your Singer 221 featherweight sewing machine.

9. Clean the outside of the machine somewhat more thoroughly with a diluted all purpose cleaner. Apply a thin layer of mineral oil to shine your Singer featherweight once it is clean.
