Getting Started

1. Start out small. Don't just go out and rent a building, take out a small business loan, open shop and expect to make a profit. Plan to start small and out of your home, at least to begin with.

2. Gather equipment and tools. You don't need a lot of specialty tools, but you do need some. You will need to have a variety of software utility programs and a few hardware tools. The hardware tools mostly consist of a few screwdrivers, soldering tool, pliers and a few cans of compressed air and some other tools that you might find in a regular handyman's toolbox. Software utilities consist of virus software, hardware diagnostics, disc formatting software and other tools. Experience will dictate what is necessary.

3. Get a business license. Every state, county and city are different in terms of what it requires, but a good place to start is the clerk's office of the circuit or district court to apply for a trade license. If your state charges sales tax, you will also need to get a state sales tax license.

4. Set up a bank account. It is good to have a separate account to pay for expenses and deposit earnings. This will make accounting simpler and will make you look more professional.

5. Advertise at first by using word of mouth and low-cost initiatives such as putting fliers up at the local market. To get word-of-mouth advertising started get some business cards made up and give them out to friends and family. Offer to give these first potential customers a significant discount. This will help build business, good will and if you make a mistake it might not be held against you since you didn't charge very much.

6. Consider specializing in area that has more need. Laptop computers are more expensive, and more people are apt to get them repaired. You may also consider specializing in instant help for emergency computer situations. Find what works best in your area and be willing to be flexible.
