Care For Cedar Logs

A cedar-log home.

Cedar logs provide a beautiful finish for both homes and furniture pieces. However, they need some maintenance and care to stay looking their very best. Take a few precautions and provide the appropriate care to ensure that your cedar logs stay looking new and retain their charm. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Decide how you want to treat your cedar logs. If you leave them untreated and exposed to the elements, the cedar will turn a weathered gray and lose it's red color. To keep the red color, you brush on an oil-based stain.

2. Choose the type of stain that you want to use. If you don't want to change the logs' appearance at all, choose a clear stain. However, you can also choose a stain that deposits color on the logs. Don't use varnish, which will crack and peel over time.

3. When caring for and repairing cedar logs, always use hot-dipped, galvanized nails. Never use galvanized nails, as they will cause the logs to have rust stains, and can weaken the logs structurally.

4. Brush the logs with a stiff scrub brush each season to loosen dirt and get rid of mud build-up.

5. Wash your logs with a power washer once a year. You can rent a power washer from your local hardware store. With a power washer, you can care for the logs that you can't reach with a broom, and blast away any dirt and debris.
