1. Set a competitive hourly rate. In 2006, the national average for PC repair technicians was about $100 per hour. Research other PC repair businesses in your area, determine what they are charging and establish a fair market rate.


2. Purchase the equipment that you will need to operate your PC repair business. You will need to have a range of software programs, anti-virus and anti-spyware programs; laptop; external hard drives and PC for hooking up and testing client computers. You will also need tools for dismantling circuit board components. Make sure you upgrade to the newest operating systems and keep up with the latest technological advances. But a familiarity with older systems is also required.


3. Acquire Microsoft certifications. There are several programs provided by Microsoft. These programs are essential for I.T. professionals, and certainly for someone running a PC repair business. Also consider Apple certifications for possibly expanding your business to include Apple computers.


4. Offer discounts for some specialized services.Don't focus exclusively on specialized work, as you should be able to address a wide range of PC problems. But advertise periodically for services, such as promoting an anti-virus solution or offering to troubleshoot computers to make them run faster. These promotions will introduce your to new customers.
