Requirements For The Home Repairs Merit Badge

Scouts must demonstrate a multitude of skills to earn the home repairs badge.


The Scouts award the Home Repairs merit badge to those who demonstrate a particular set of skills relating to both protecting a home from potential damage and repairing damage that has already taken place. All of the requirements for the Home Repairs badge may be supervised by either a merit badge counselor or the parent of the Scout attempting to earn the badge. The following requirement sets must be completed to earn the badge.


Precautions


The scout must discuss the general precautions of home repairs with a merit badge counselor or parent, naming no less than 10 safe practices every repairer should know.


Requirement Set #1


The Scout must complete four of the following eight objectives: fix or repair a yard tool while demonstrating proper clean up and storage techniques; weather strip a door or window; caulk cracks or joints open to the weather; waterproof a basement; repair a concrete or asphalt break; repair a screen door or window; fix a pane of glass; solder a wire or metal object.


Requirement Set #2


The Scout must complete three of the following seven objectives: install tool storing equipment; build a workbench; repair furniture; paint or varnish furniture; repair a sagging door or gate; fix a loose step or railing; repair a fence.


Requirement Set #3


The Scout must complete two of the following four objectives: locate an electrical box and learn about fuse replacement and resetting circuit breakers; replace an electrical cord or repair a socket or plug; install a light switch; replace a wall outlet.


Requirement Set #4


The Scout must complete two of the following five objectives: clean a clogged trap or drain; repair a faucet; repair a toilet; repair a hose or connector; clean or reinstall a sprinkler head.


Requirement Set #5


The Scout must complete three of the following seven objectives: paint a wall or ceiling; repair damaged tile or linoleum; install a curtain rod and hang a curtain; replace window blind cords; replace or repair a window sash cord; reinforce a frame; repair a glass, china or pottery object.
