Home Remedy For Dry Flaky Scalp

A dry, flaky scalp is caused by overuse of shampoo and conditioners as well as styling products, like hairspray, that build up on the scalp. The scalp becomes itchy and begins to flake off, causing embarrassing dandruff. Try using these natural home remedies to treat and get rid of a dry, flaky scalp.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a natural alternative to help fight a dry flaky scalp. Heat 1/2 a cup of coconut oil in the microwave for about 30 seconds or until lukewarm. Massage on to the scalp and along the shaft of the hair. Pull your hair up and place a hair cap on the head so that the coconut oil can soak on the scalp overnight. Wash the coconut oil out the next morning with a mild shampoo.

Aloe Vera Gel

Gel from an aloe vera plant works better in treating dry flaky scalp because it's an all natural product. Tear off an aloe vera leaf and slice it open. Using your fingers, scoop out the aloe gel and massage it on to the scalp. Let the aloe vera gel set on the scalp for 30 minutes and then wash out with shampoo. Aloe vera gel will also add moisture to the hair, which helps prevent a dry, flaky scalp.

Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix a 1/2 cup of clear honey with a 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar into a bowl. To help lessen the effects of the smell of vinegar add a couple of drops of tea tree oil or lavender oil to the mixture and mix again. Once the ingredients are mixed together, massage the mixture into the scalp and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Use this mixture twice a week until the scalp is no longer flaky and itchy.
