Pick Lactose Free Breads And Grains

If you are lactose intolerant, travel with dairy digestion pills and avoid certain foods as much as you can, you may be eating more lactose than you think. There could be lactose in the bread, cereal or granola you eat. Read on to find out pick lactose-free bread and grains.

Pick Lactose-Free Breads and Grains


1. Look for a kosher symbol. Depending upon how allergic you are to lactose, you can eat bread with a K that incorporates a half-circle to form the left-hand line of the letter K followed by either the word parve or a letter P that is encased in a semicircle. This bread does not have to be 100-percent dairy free. Kosher standards require that parve foods (parve can also be spelled pareve and parevine) should not intentionally contain any dairy or derivatives; but trace amounts could be included without affecting a product's kosher status. Less than 1.6 percent of the product can include dairy or some derivative unintentionally and still be kosher. If you are very sensitive, watch out for bread with the kosher K followed by DE encased in a corresponding semicircle. This means that the product was made with equipment used to make dairy foods as well.


2. Look for particular brands that are known not to include dairy. Companies like Nu-World Foods make dairy-free flat breads, cereals, snacks, and side dishes with amaranth, a whole grain that's high in protein and fiber. You could also try Bake'hmm Bagels. They're kosher and vegan, meaning they are made without animal products. Also try the bagels, granolas, cookies, and snack bars made by Enjoy Life Foods. They're dairy free. 3. Try pita, tortillas, or Indian naan instead of regular bread. You can use them much like you would use regular bread; but they're typically free of any dairy or derivatives. Make sure to look at the ingredients.


4. Look in the bakery department or the bread aisle of your store for locally baked organic breads. More than likely, these breads will be made without dairy or derivatives. Make sure to look at the ingredients.

Always read the ingredients carefully.


When looking for dairy and its derivatives in the ingredients of any product, look for more than just lactose or any word that incorporates lacto or lacta. Look also for casein, a milk protein, or ingredient that includes the word caseinate, like calcium caseinate.
