Hot water heater problem

Hot Water Heater Problem

I have a 40 gal State Censible 510E heater. I am having to reset it about every 3 days or so. What happens is all of a sudden the water will turn extremely hot, then I know the next morning will be a cold shower. I have been resetting now for about three months. How can this be fixed? Thanks for your help! Sheila Replace both upper and lower stats. Is there a step by step instruction on replace stats??? Thanks, Sheila There simple to replace, turn power off at the panel 1st, after you get the new stats, one stat is smaller then the other, smaller one goes on the bottom, larger one on top, remove the wires but remember which terminal they came off of, then install the new star/s and put the wires back on the same terminals they came off of. Thanks, Ron...I really appreciate it! Sheila Its most likely the upper thermostat. You could possibly figure out which one it was if you would like as it certainly be either in this case. It may be easiest to replace both, but it is only one that is causing the problem. If the water is very hot for a while and as you run some out, say 10 gallons or so does it turn back to normal temp as it is running? If it is hot at first then normal it is the upper thermostat. If it very (overly) hot till it starts to go cold, like a long shower then it is the bottom one. eskayes, Do replace them both, I've had dealt with hot water heaters a long time and have found that if you only replace the one stat it may not be the one that was bad, it don't hurt to do them both, no reason to take a chance at replacing just one. I agree about replacing both of them if you dont have the troubleshooting knowfigure out which one it is. If She cares to know, I elaborate a bit just to make it interesting. I can evem make it somewhat more simple. If the top of the tank is too hot (the water you use first) its the top stat, if the whole tank is overheated its the bottom one. True if she wants to learn troubleshoot it. Me myself, I replace them both, if the top one is out, or the bottom one is out, does not mean a week from now the one you didn't replace won't go out, I don't care for recalls in my business. Thanks to you both. I am having trouble finding the replacements. Top one is Apcom WH8S; bottom is Apcom WH7. I looked at the State site. They do not have them. Can you tell me where to find them? Also, I do not have to drain any of the water to perform the replacement, do I? Thanks, Sheila You don't have to drain the heater to replace these, the stats don't have to from state water heater, you can get replacement stats at a home improvement center store or hardware store, the helpers in the electrical dept will be able to get you the ones you need, just let them know what type of heater you got. Go to most hardware stores, or big box stores and get a upper and a lower. (or if you can fig out which it is you need only one) It doesnt need to be an exact replacement, most stores have unviversal replacements that fit most models. Thanks...I should be able to find them then at Home Depot. This website is extremely helpful to someone like me... Have a great week!!
