Instructions
1. Locate a heating repair company that performs furnace repairs. Although you can search online or in the phone book, the best source is a word-of-mouth recommendation. Talk to friends who have had furnace repairs done and get their recommendations for a reliable firm. Get several possibilities and make a list with the names and phone numbers.
2. Call the first furnace repair business on your list and ask if they are currently booking repairs. Some companies may be so busy that they are not taking on new customers or booking any furnace repair appointments until things slow down. If this is the case, move on to the next company on your list.
3. When you reach a company that is booking appointments for furnace repair, ask whether they service your brand of furnace and how long it will take before they can send a service person to your home. If you furnace has completely broken down, tell them that your situation is urgent. Most companies prioritize, especially in the winter, handling calls first in cases where a person has no heat at all. You will also need to describe the symptoms to give the company a general idea of how long the appointment might take.
4. If the company can book a furnace repair call for you within a reasonable amount of time, ask how much you will be charged for the call and if that amount will be credited towards any necessary repairs. If the amount seems excessive, check with some of the other companies on your list before booking an appointment.
5. If the charge for the house call sounds reasonable, book the furnace repair appointment. Most companies will not give you an exact time because the repair person may be delayed at the previous appointment. However, many will specify whether they will aim for morning or afternoon.
6. If your furnace repair booking is several days away, call the day before to confirm the appointment. With many companies, this will not be necessary, as they will call you to confirm. If they don't, make sure you take this step yourself, confirming the date and timespan if one was given.
