Fix A Scratch On Opticalgrade Glass

Optical glass is found on precision devices such as telescopes and common eyewear like prescription lenses. To fix a scratch on a piece of optical glass, buff the scratch so that the surface layer is lowered. The procedure is straightforward but must be handled with deliberation so that you don't cause additional scratches. To repair the scratched glass you'll need supplies from a jeweler's shop. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Spray optical glass cleaner on an edge of a soft cloth. Wipe the surface of the optical glass that has the scratch on it with the edge of the cloth, using slow, circular motions. Wipe the surface again in the same manner, only this time with a dry edge of the cloth.

2. Dip your finger into the jeweler's rouge. Press your finger against the optical glass, to one side of the scratch. Press down gently as you drag your finger along the scratch to leave a line of jeweler's rouge. Lift your finger when you reach the other side of the scratch. Wash your finger off with tap water.

3. Place the lamb's wool buffing pad against the glass, to one side of the scratch. Press down on the pad as you drag it across the scratch to its end and then back again -- slowly rotate the pad with a circular motion while doing this.

4. Remove the pad. Angle the optical glass so that you can see if the scratch is still visible. If the scratch can still be seen, reapply jeweler's rouge and buff the optical glass with the pad again.

5. Spray optical glass cleaner on an edge of a soft cloth. Wipe the surface of the optical glass with the edge of the cloth, using slow, circular motions. Wipe the surface again in the same manner, only this time with a dry edge of the cloth.
