Most remodeling grants go only to those whose homes are in major need of repair.
Federal and state government agencies, nonprofit organizations and other initiatives offer grants and loans for Americans looking to remodel their homes. Most of these grants are available for low-income families, veterans, the disabled and the elderly. Does this Spark an idea?
Rural Repair Grants
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development department offers grant funds and loans to low-income families who need to make repairs to their homes for safety and health reasons. Only legal U.S. citizens who have an acceptable credit history and an income that falls below 50 percent of their county's median income level are eligible for the loans and grants.
Veteran Home Repair Grants
Another national grant that can be applied toward home remodeling is the Temporary Residence Adaption (TRA) grant offered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The one-time grant is designed to help those veterans who were injured in the line of duty. Veterans can use the grant money to remodel their homes and adapt them to suit their particular disabilities. The maximum amount of the grant is $14,000 as of May 2011.
NonProfit Home Repair Grants
Low-income Americans can apply to earn home repairs through nonprofit organizations such as Rebuilding Together. The main purpose of that organization is to provide necessary home repairs to veterans, elderly citizens, disaster recovery victims, the disabled and low-income families who are in danger of losing their homes or who are living in homes that desperately need repairs. The organization has more than 200 affiliates spread across states the U.S. as of 2011.
