Apple iOS 5 firmware brings text-to-speech functionality to the iPad.
The Apple iPad, with the release of the iOS 5 firmware update, is now able to perform a text-to-speech function, reading areas that you select on the screen. The VoiceOver function works in every app on the device, including the Amazon Kindle application. This means you can tap a selection in the book you're reading and have the iPad read it back to you as you follow along. This feature is not enabled by default, so you'll have to turn it on.
Instructions
1. Press the "Power" button on the top of the iPad to turn on the device. Wait a few moments for the device to boot up, then move the slider switch from left to right. The lock screen is now unlocked.
2. Tap the Settings icon from the iPad's home screen. Tap the General tab from the left-hand side, then tap the "Accessibility" button.
3. Scroll down a bit on the screen and tap the VoiceOver option. On the next screen, move the switch from the OFF to the ON position. A female voice begins reading different items on the screen.
4. Press the "Home" button on the iPad to return to the device's home screen. Tap the Kindle icon to pull up the application.
5. Tap the book you wish to read. On the next screen, when you can see the book's text, tap the first word in the paragraph from which you wish to have the voice start reading. The voice continues to read the book's text until you tap a different selection or exit the Amazon Kindle app.
