An HVAC license in Texas requires both experience and money.
In Texas, getting licensed as an air conditioning and refrigeration contractor -- the official title for an HVAC contractor -- requires you to submit an application and proof of experience. You must also pay a fee and pass a state licensing examination. The license lets you provide either commercial or environmental, or comfort related, service as a contractor. The license is further restricted as to the size of system you, as a contractor, may install or repair.
Instructions
Registration or Certification - Technician
1. Navigate to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website. Download the license application.
2. Complete the application. You can substitute a verifiable university or trade school transcript for up to two years of the required experience. However, the transcript must show an earned associates or bachelors degree in air condition, refrigeration or mechanical engineering.
3. Write a check for the application fee, which is $115 as of July 2012. Mail the completed application and fee to the TDLR, P.O. Box 12157, Austin, TX 78711. If you are approved for testing, the testing company will notify you of your exam date.
4. Pay the examination fee to the testing company and complete the examination. The TDLR will notify you of your score. You may take the test until you pass.
5. File a request for your license when you receive the notice that you passed the test. You are required to present evidence of Texas Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor's insurance coverage together with the request for the license.
