Most mufflers are surrounded by metal heat shields that aid in noise reduction.
The muffler is a key part of a vehicle's exhaust system and limits the noise of an engine. A typical muffler accepts the flow of exhaust from the exhaust manifold and routes the air through several chambers to absorb the engine sounds. A damaged muffler will allow metallic growls to emanate from the vehicle. Typical repair products include tape, metal putties, and bandages.
Tape
Muffler tape is the most common product used in muffler repair. Manufacturers use a variety of substances to make the tape. The most common is a metal-based tape similar to that used to wrap chimney pipes in a house. Other types include silicone-based or fiberglass-based tape. Muffler tape is certified to operate at the high temperatures associated with a muffler while maintaining adhesion. The tape is used for small holes or cracks in a muffler. The product is not as secure as welding or other repairs but is designed for quick repairs.
Metal Putty
Metal putty is an epoxy-style adhesive. The putty is typically sold in a bar form. You would cut off a bit from the end of the bar, knead the material to activate the chemicals and press the material into a hole or crack. The putty hardens rapidly and is heat resistant. Metal putty is designed for holes and cracks. Damaged or cracked seams do not accept the putty well due to the flexing that can occur with a seam.
Bandages
Muffler bandages are similar to the cast doctors place on a broken bone. The product is a chemically enhanced strip of cloth, made from silicone or fiberglass, that uses the heat from the engine to permanently harden and seal the bandage. You would wrap the bandage around the damaged area, including seams, and press it into place. Overlap the edges as you would if you were wrapping a splint around an injured hand. Run the vehicle for a period of time to activate the chemicals and harden the bandage.
