Obtain An Oklahoma Electrical License

According to the United States Department of Labor, there are nearly 1 million licensed electricians in the United States, a figure that is growing. Along with plumbing and mechanical contracting, this high demand job is one of the few construction related professions that require a license in the state of Oklahoma. Obtaining an electrician's license in the State of Oklahoma takes a considerable amount of training.


Instructions


1. Seek practical and classroom training. Find a licensed electrician and ask to become their apprentice, as well as enrolling in continuing education classes offered by the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board. According to Oklahoma state law, an electrical apprentice must be 16 years old.


2. Fill out an apprentice application from the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board website. A $25 fee is required for the first year of apprenticeship, and $20 is required for subsequent renewals.


3. Obtain 4,000 hours of experience as an electrical apprentice in residential areas to become a residential journeyman electrician, or obtain 8,000 hours in any situation for to become an unlimited journeyman electrician. Half of the numbers of hours required may be obtained from classroom instruction.


4. Fill out an Electrical Contractor Application. Applicants must be 18 years old and pay a $75 application fee. Answer at least 70 percent of the questions correctly on the Business and Law exam as well as the Oklahoma Journeyman Contractor exam and wait two to four weeks for processing. A journeyman electrician is defined as by Oklahoma state law as anyone other than a licensed electrical contractor who conducts electrical work. "


5. Obtain 8,000 hours of total residential electrical contracting work to become a residential contractor, or obtain 12,000 hours of residential and commercial electrical contracting to become an unlimited electrical contractor.. Hours gained through formal electrical related education or through apprenticeship may be included towards part of the overall total.


6. Fill out an Electrical Contractor Application, and answer at least 70 percent of the questions correctly on the exam given by the CIB's Committee of Electrical Examiners. Applicants must also pay a $330 application fee.
